Very Special Herons live in South Florida

In South Florida we have a couple very special and rare herons. One is the white heron. I’ve been fortunate enough to spot this rare and elusive bird in several places over the years, mostly in the Everglades National Park. In 2012 I was lucky enough to capture a couple images of this one at the entrance of Shark Valley the north west section of ENP along US41 Tamiami trail. I’ve also seen them on Anhinga trail in the main section of the park over the years. I’ve had friends spot them along the west coast also, Ding Darling and Fort Desoto. They show albino traits, reddish pupils and very light legs. (I was using a flash so it may have caused a little red eye in a couple images)

These are very beautiful large, white herons with the very distinguishable blue heron beak.

Check out the alligators just behind this trusting heron.

The most rare is the Wundermann’s Heron. This one made a home in the Wakodahatchee rookery in 2012 and fledged 2 chicks.

I followed these two chicks from the egg to fledging that year capturing 100s of shots from along the boardwalk just a few feet away.

Living in South Florida is absolutely wonderful and offers some special birds to see and photograph along the way.
